Grand Cascade in Peterhof In Russia: History,Facts, & Services
Grand Cascade in Peterhof is a spectacular series of waterfalls and basins designed by the German-born Russian sculptor and architect Bartholomeus Rastrelli in the late 1720s and early 1730s. It is located in the heart of the historic Peterhof Palace and Gardens complex outside of Saint Petersburg, Russia. The Cascade consists of an upper and lower tier of waterways and monuments, spilling out from the Amber Room of the Grand Palace. The fountains are fed by the waters of the local Gulf of Finland, which are naturally filled by melting glacial ice. The Cascade is one of the most beloved and visited monuments in Russia, and it is celebrated as one of the grandest creations of the Baroque style. Services offered at Grand Cascade include guided tours of the park, boat rides down the shallow canals of the Cascade, and events such as the popular New Year's Eve firework displays.
