History:
Gotland Art Museum (GAM) is a museum in Visby, Gotland, Sweden. It is the only art museum in the Nordic countries to specialize exclusively in contemporary art. The museum is housed in a 19th century manor house called Osuborg and opened to the public in 2001. The museum was founded in 1995 by the non-profit organization Gotlands Konstskola (GKS), which had been founded five years earlier with the aim of providing an education and exhibition platform for visual arts on Gotland. GKS gradually acquired work from leading Swedish, Nordic, and international artists. As its collection grew, it needed to find a larger space to house its collection. In 2000, Osuborg was purchased by GKS and in 2001, the museum opened to the public with its inaugural exhibition “The World in Gotland” by Swedish artist Christian Troelsgaard. Since then, the museum has grown to include a permanent collection, various special exhibitions, as well as artist-in-residence programs and other art related events. In 2019, the museum celebrated its 20th anniversary. To celebrate, the museum hosted an anniversary exhibition entitled “Back to the Future” featuring over 150 art works from the last two decades. It also launched a web based archive of past exhibitions, events and artists-in-residence projects, as well as the 20th anniversary publication, Gotland Art Museum: 20 Years of Contemporary Art. Today, the Gotland Art Museum remains an important platform for contemporary art in the region. It has a permanent collection of over 1000 works by artists such as Olle Magnusson, Per Olsson, Mikael Gfors, and Carl Johan Högberg. The museum continues to host exhibitions, artist-in-residence programs, and other events, making it an important cultural space for Gotland.
