History:

Uppsala University Museum Gustavianum is located in Uppsala, Sweden and was founded as a museum in 1625. The museum is part of Uppsala University, which itself is the oldest university in Scandinavia, having been established in 1477. The building housing the museum, known as the "Gustavianum" is part of the university and was built in 1625 as an public attraction in complement to the university. The Gustavianum was originally known as the University’s “arsenal” or “arsenalum universale”. This served as a repository of exotic plants, zoological specimens, antique artefacts and other treasures collected from around the world. The museum also housed a botanical garden filled with plants from Asia, Africa, the Americas and all other parts of the world. During the 19th century, the Gustavianum underwent significant changes when it was remodelled by the architect Olof Tempelman.
