Constructed during the 13th century, the Florence Cathedral has been carefully designed, reconstructed, and adapted throughout its almost 800-year history. The initial plan of the cathedral called for a traditional Latin cross plan with four equal arms and a large glass window in the middle. Construction began on the building in 1296 under the guidance of Arnolfo di Cambio. Arnolfo was the architect of both Florence Cathedral and the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, and was well-known for his innovative design and skills in Gothic architecture.
