History:

The ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, a small village situated in the Peloponnese along the western coast. They were celebrated every four years around the end of July and beginning of August. It is thought that the first Olympic Games took place as early as 776 BC. These comprised of contests in sprinting, long distance running, wresting, boxing, the discus and the javelin, and the pentathlon (five events – running, long jump, throws, boxing and wrestling). The ancient Olympic Games were originally held to honour Zeus and were the most important of all the athletic festivals in Ancient Greece. In order to participate, athletes were required to take part in religious rituals, make sacrifices and swear an oath. A religious truce was also declared to ensure safe travel and a peaceful gathering. By the sixth century BC, the Olympic Games had become a pan-Hellenic event, and by the fifth century BC, more than forty cities were participating. As the Games grew in popularity, many events were added, such as horse and chariot racing, hoplite (armoured) combat, boxing, Olympic pankration and chariot racing. Over time, women were also allowed to participate in some events, such as the chariot race. The Olympic Games became a major cultural event in Ancient Greece and reached its peak during the fifth century BC. At this time the Games were dominated by the Spartans and, by 384 BC, the victor list at the Games had become entirely Spartan. In 393 AD, the Roman emperor Theodosius I banned the Olympic Games, as part of a general prohibition of pagan sports and festivities, and the Games ceased to be held in their original form. Many of its features, including its religious roots and its noble spirit, however, continued to influence modern sports.
