History:
Monument Cola di Rienzo is a monument located in Rome, Italy and it is dedicated to Cola di Rienzo, a 14th century Roman revolutionary. Di Rienzo was a populist leader who led revolts against the Roman aristocrats in the late 1300s and is seen as a hero of the Roman people. The monument itself is an obelisk, made of porphyry from Egypt and was erected in the Piazza di Campitelli at the base of the Capitoline Hill. The obelisk is flanked two marble lions, which were given by Pope Pius IX in 1860. Not much is known about the origins of the obelisk, but it is believed to have been a prominent feature of the Ancient Roman landscape and dates back thousands of years. Its exact origins are unknown, but it is thought to have been built as a marker for the Forum of Nerva, which was a major meeting place in the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the entrance to the Forum was blocked and the obelisk was forgotten until it was rediscovered by excavations in the late 19th century. After its rediscovery, the obelisk was moved from its original location by Pope Leo XIII and was subsequently erected in honor of Cola di Rienzo in 1888. Cola di Rienzo is now remembered and commemorated annually at the Monument Cola di Rienzo, a celebration of his courageous and compassionate actions during the struggles of Medieval Rome.
