History:

The ancient archaeological site of Messene, located in the Peloponnese region of Greece, dates back to the 4th century BC. During this time, an important city-state by the name of Messenia was established in the area. It was originally founded by the Theban general Epaminondas and its name was derived from the mythical king of Messenia, Euphaes. In 369 BC, the city was seized by the Spartans after a two-year siege, leading to Messene becoming a part of the Spartan empire. Under the reign of King Alexander the Great, the area experienced a period of growth and prosperity, becoming an important commercial hub. The city was later destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC, leaving only some of its ruins behind. In modern times, the site has been the focus of excavations since the mid-19th century, with major archaeological finds made from the 1950s onwards. These have uncovered various artifacts such as walls, towers and shrines, as well a theatre and stadium, providing a valuable insight into daily life in Messene during its heyday. For visitors to the site today, there are still many buildings and monuments to enjoy – from the ruins of the Greco-Roman temple of Asclepius to the huge city walls and the remains of the 5th century BC theatre.
