Agios Dimitrios is a municipality in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is located in the southeastern suburbs of Thessaloniki, and borders the municipality of Dendropotamos in the east and west, and the municipality of Efkarpia in the north. The Agios Dimitrios Municipality is named for the namesake saint and the patron saint of the city of Thessaloniki, Saint Demetrius. As of 2011, the municipality had a population of 37,422. Agios Dimitrios is home to a number of churches, schools, cultural and sporting venues, and is renowned for its museums and galleries, including the Pavlos Melas Memorial Museum, the Thessaloniki War History Museum, and the Thessaloniki Institute of Computer Science. History:

Agios Dimitrios is a municipality in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is located in the northwestern part of the prefecture and has a population of over 32,000. The area was first settled in the 4th century BC and became a city during Byzantine times. The early history of the area is connected to the legend of Roman emperor, Constantine the great, who stored his treasures in secret tunnels in the area while waging a war with Licinius. Around this time, Agios Dimitrios Church was built and it has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. In the 11th century, the area was an important centre for Greek Orthodox Christianity with five monasteries, the largest being that of the Saint George Monastery, founded by Emperor Alexios I Comnenos. During Ottoman rule of Thessaloniki, the area was populated mainly by the Muslims of the city. In the early 20th century, the neighborhood was known for its strong Jewish population. During the Greco-Turkish War, Agios Dimitrios was a major center of resistance for the Greek forces and the entire neighbourhood was destroyed by the Turks. Following the war, much of the neighbourhood was rebuilt and a large industrial sector was established. Agios Dimitrios today is a vibrant part of Thessaloniki. Culturally, its traditional mix of Greeks, Muslims, and Jews have given the area its own unique charm and flavor.
