History:

Skansen Open-Air Museum is considered to be the oldest open-air museum in the world. It was founded in 1891 by the Swedish teacher and naturalist Artur Hazelius, and has been located on Djurgården, an island in Stockholm, since then. Hazelius was inspired by the Open-Air Museums of Denmark as well as the ethnographic and natural history museums of his own country.
