History:
Skansen Open-Air Museum is considered to be the oldest open-air museum in the world. It was founded in 1891 by the Swedish teacher and naturalist Artur Hazelius, and has been located on Djurgården, an island in Stockholm, since then. Hazelius was inspired by the Open-Air Museums of Denmark as well as the ethnographic and natural history museums of his own country. Initially, Hazelius collected and exhibited items from the different parts of Sweden in order to promote the diversity of the country’s culture. He gathered houses from Central Sweden, Dalarna, Småland and the other provinces, and early Skansen also included an aquarium, a terrarium, shops, and restaurants. Over the years, the museum has grown in terms of size and scope, and nowadays its offerings include Scandinavian history, culture and nature as well as traditional crafts and activities. There are also many specific topics of interest such as Sami life, the working of traditional logging technologies, fishing, and Swedish handicrafts. Skansen also hosts regular events and concerts, as well as educational courses and activities. Since its foundation, Skansen Open-Air Museum has had a central place in Swedish culture, and it continues to be a place of learning as well as entertainment.
