History:

Tien Son Cave is a system of caves located near the city of Dong Hoi, in the province of Quang Binh, Vietnam. The area is known for its stunning and unique limestone formations, and it has been a popular tourist attraction since the 1950s. The cave system was formed by erosive action of millions of years of water, and has a history that dates back to the Paleolithic era (2 million-10,000 BC). Remains of ancient human settlement have been uncovered in the caves, both indicating primitive settlement and later habitation by the early Viet people who spent time in the area. The cave was officially discovered in 1950 by two French scientists, Pierre Paris and Paul-Emile Victor. They named the site Tien Son Cave, or “The Fairy’s Cave”, based on a local legend which tells of how fairies used to come down to the cave to bathe and play. In 1990, the cave system was opened to the public, and soon became a popular tourist destination. The cave system is appreciated for its diverse and spectacularly shaped stalagmites and stalactites, and its chambers, riddled with passageways and caverns, boast beautiful, often psychedelic rock formations. Today, Tien Son Cave is part of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
