Hang Son Doong (also known as Son Doong Cave) is the largest known cave in the world, located in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. It is also the largest cave passage by cross-section in the world. Hang Son Doong was discovered in 1991 by a local man named Ho Khanh but was not explored until 2009 by the British Cave Research Association, led by Howard Limbert. Although its exact origin is unclear, Son Doong is believed to have formed approximately 2-3 million years ago due to river erosion. The river is thought to have flowed underground until it encountered a barrier of almost impermeable rock, forcing the water to form a new channel. The cave has since been covered in calcite, optical spar, and other mineral deposits.
