History:
Ly Son Island is an archipelago of volcanic origin located in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam. It lies about 30 km south of Quang Ngai Town, and is part of the Truong Sa archipelago (Spratly Islands) in South China Sea. The archipelago consists of two main islands (Ly Son and An Binh), and several smaller islets such as Hon Vo and Dao Xung. The history of Ly Son Island dates back to the early 3rd millennium BC, when the first inhabitants, said to be of Malayo-Polynesian descent, arrived. The archipelago was part of the Champa kingdom and controlled by the kingdom of Champa until 1697, when the king of Champa ceded it to Vietnam. The Vietnamese established a military garrison and established fisheries. By the 19th century, the island had become an important trading center for Chinese and Vietnamese merchants. The French occupied the island in 1895 and established a military base. The island was the site of a major naval battle in 1945 during the Second World War, when the French forces clashed with Japanese forces. The Japanese occupied the island until 1951 when the French resumed control. The French incorporated the island with the rest of Vietnam in 1954 and the island was officially part of the unified state of Vietnam. In 1975, the island was integrated into the unified Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and it still remains an important part of the country today. It is now a popular tourist destination, known for its pristine coral reefs, beautiful beaches, and its unique cultural heritage.
