History:

Linh Ung Pagoda, also known as Linh Ung Bai But, is a Buddhist temple located in Da Nang, Vietnam. It is the largest of all the pagodas in the city and its primary purpose is to provide spiritual guidance to the local community. The first incarnation of what ended up becoming Linh Ung Pagoda is believed to have been constructed during the latter half of the fifteenth century, by the order of King Le Thanh Tong. At the time it was known as the Dai Bi Tu Pagoda and was located within the Nguyen dynasty's Imperial City in Hue. In the early eighteenth century, the pagoda was moved to present-day Da Nang and it was then that it received the name Linh Ung, which translates to "Gift of the Dragon", in reference to a dragon-shaped mountain located nearby. The pagoda underwent a major renovation in the late eighteenth century, which saw the inclusion of buildings such as the meditation hall, sanctuary and a modest library. In 1822, Linh Ung Pagoda was relocated yet again, this time to the area of the current-day Da Nang Airport. The temple began to attract a large following of travelers and the local community alike, which prompted the construction of a larger and more ornate complex. This new complex comprised of several new buildings, such as a lecture hall, an auditorium, an assembly hall and an administration building. These additions meant that Linh Ung Pagoda had become an important center of religious, cultural and educational activity for the local community. Unfortunately, in 1966, much of the pagoda was destroyed during the Vietnam War. After this destruction, the rebuilding of Linh Ung Pagoda began, and it stands proud in its current location today.
