History:

Hang Dau Go is one of the most iconic sites of Ha Long Bay, located in Quang Ninh province in northeastern Vietnam. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ha Long Bay and was once known as the "Three Caves," due to its three distinct peaks. The area was first discovered in the 18th century by the two fishermen Hồ Chợ Hai and Giản Vương who named it after their own catches of birds, and crabs. The two fishermen lived close to the limestone karsts situated in today’s Dau Go. The fishermen created their own system of navigation by studying these rocks and its topography. During the late 19th century, around the same time when a strategic fortress was being constructed at present day Ha Long City, the French Navy had established a gunboat base at Dau Go. The French were particularly interested in the potential of Dau Go’s natural harbor for military maneuvers and used the area as one of their strategic strongholds when they occupied Indochina. Nowadays, a visit to Hang Dau Go is considered a must when taking boat rides through the dramatic limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay.
