Long Xuyen Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province, Vietnam. Built in 1887, it is one of the oldest cathedrals in the country. The church was constructed to serve the city’s French and Vietnamese Christian populations. The design of the church blends of three architectural styles- European Neo-Gothic, French-Indochina Baroque, and Chinese traditional architecture. The structure is composed of sturdily structural brick walls and contains five large towers. The largest of these five towers serves as the main structure while the other four are for smaller bell towers. The church grounds also include a large park with a conference hall. Long Xuyen Cathedral has an interesting history. In the 1700’s, the area surrounding the cathedral was a religious refugee camp, housing people fleeing from persecution in the nearby Muslim provinces. The camp gradually grew, eventually becoming the city of Long Xuyen. The main church of this area was built in 1878 and was made of wood and straw. In 1887, the current structure was built from brick and stone to replace the old wood and straw one. Long Xuyen Cathedral offers many services for its congregants including regular Masses, catechism classes, confession, and baptisms. The parish also offers social service programs such as health clinics, scholarship programs for needy children, and spiritual leaders who provide guidance and instruction. During the Vietnamese New Year, there are traditional dragon dances and firecracker shows, and the ground is usually filled with the smell of incense. There is also a Christmas service held annually which is attended by a large crowd of people.
