History:

The Phat Diem Cathedral, also known as the Stone Cathedral, is an impressive Catholic religious complex located approximately 150 kilometers south of Hanoi in Ninh Binh Province in Vietnam. The cathedral complex was constructed by the former Bishop, Father Cao Van Tri, between 1875 and 1899. The complex is composed of three distinct churches of varying architectural styles. These are the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Wooden Church and the Stone Church. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is the largest of the three churches and is built entirely from stone. It is two stories high and is constructed in the Romanesque style with a cruciform plan with a long choir and two side chapels. The Wooden Church is located to the east and is, as the name suggests, built from wood. It is the smallest of the three churches and is believed to have been built in 1880. The Stone Church is the second largest of the churches and is the most modern of the three. It is built in a Gothic style and was completed in 1894. In addition to the three churches, the cathedral complex also includes a convent for nuns, an orphanage, a bell tower and a large bell made of bronze. Phat Diem Cathedral is one of the most important religious complexes in Vietnam and has been steeped in history since its construction. It has been used as a source of inspiration and refuge for Catholics since Father Cao Van Tri began its construction in 1875.
