History:

The Mochima National Park is located in the Venezuelan state of Sucre. The park was established in 1974 and covers an area of approximately 1,430 square kilometres of Caribbean coast. It is known for its sandy beaches, cays, coral reefs, islets, coves and unique marine biodiversity. It is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including mammals such as dolphins, green sea turtles and manatees, as well as rare species of birds, fish, crustaceans and plants. Mochima is also an important destination for sport fishing. The waters of the park are rich in several species of fish, including many dolphin species, snappers, groupers, mackerel and more. These species thrive in the varied habitats of the park's shallow and deep waters. In October 1992, Mochima was declared a national park by the government of Venezuela and remained under the care of the Ministry of Environment. In 2001, it was recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance due to its role in biodiversity conservation and its importance as a tourist destination. Since the establishment of the park, the local communities of the towns around it have benefited economically from the different activities allowed, such as fishing, tour guiding, boat tours, handicrafts and more.
