The Domus Sanctae Marthae was originally built in 1996 as a residence for the Cardinals of the Catholic Church. It was designed by the Italian architect Piero Gazzola. The building was built on the site of the former Pontifical Academy of Sciences where a section of Pope John Paul II’s papal apartments once stood. The Domus Sanctae Marthae is a five-story structure that extends from the south of Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City. It was chosen as the primary residence for the Cardinals gathered for the Conclave of 2005, to elect the successor of Pope John Paul II. It was also the first residential area in Vatican City with central air-conditioning. The building was renamed in March 2013 after Pope Francis decided to bring back the ancient tradition of residing in the Domus Sanctae Marthae during much of the "year of the two popes." The Domus Sanctae Marthae houses 115 single and double rooms, each with a private bathroom. Guests who are not Cardinals have sometimes been allowed to stay in the building, including the nine journalists who were allowed to stay in the Pope's apartment during the papal transition period.
