The Santa Marta Residence, located in Vatican City, has been home to two Popes to date. It was constructed by Pope John Paul II in 1996 and has been the residence of the Pope ever since. The Santa Marta Residence was designed by architect Pierluigi Nervi. It is a modern looking building that stands out in this historical city. The Santa Marta Residence houses the papal study, private living quarters, an auditorium where the Pope meets for special occasions, and staff offices. The space is also used for meetings between foreign dignitaries and prominent Church figures. Pope John Paul II appointed a full staff to take care of the residence, from housekeepers to cooks to special security personnel. The building was named after the Roman martyr, Saint Martha, and was originally meant to be a guesthouse for visitors to the Vatican. Upon its completion, it was dedicated and blessed by Pope John Paul II in a symbolic gesture. Pope Benedict XVI moved in during his papacy in 2005 and Pope Francis resides there currently.
