The Vatican Railway Station, also known as St. Peter’s Station or Ferrovia Vaticana, is located in the center of Vatican City. Built in 1934, it was the first railway station ever built inside a sovereign state. The station is served daily by Italian Railways, the national rail service of Italy. Vatican City State has its own separate tickets and season passes allowing entry to the station, but the trains are not allowed to stop there - passengers must disembark at the nearby Roma San Pietro Station and continue on foot to the Vatican. The station does, however, have a bookshop which specializes in religious texts as well as Italian souvenirs, and limited merchandise including customized Vatican branded t-shirts. History:

The Vatican began to build a railway station in 1874, with the full completion of the station in 1877. The station was initially a modest structure, providing basic services for pilgrims visiting the Vatican and the crypt of the deceased pontiff. As time went on, it was later enlarged, and a large dome was built over the centre of the station to provide additional space and accommodate more passengers. As trains had become the primary mode of transportation for people visiting the Vatican, this expansion was necessitated to meet the growing demand. The station was modernized further in the 1930s, during the reign of Pope Pius XI. This included the addition of a glass wall to the existing building, modern waiting rooms, ticket offices, and grander entrances. The station was extensively used by the Vatican and Pope Pius XI during World War II. He regularly used it to send aid to prisoners of war in Italy. In the early 2000s the station underwent further renovation and modernised its platforms, tracks, and buildings. Now the Vatican Railway station provides services to travelers from around the world.
