History:

The Windsor Great Park was established by William the Conqueror in 1086 as part of his new hunting forest. For centuries, the park served as the private hunting ground of the Kings and Queens of England. In 1511, King Henry VIII redesigned the park, creating a grand deer park with a large lake and an impressive entranceway. By the 17th century, Charles I had greatly extended the park, including the creation of an avenue of trees leading to the queen's lodge. The 18th century saw the creation of two extensive landscapes - The Long Walk, leading to the Copper Horse monument, and Virginia Water, a picturesque lake with landscaped gardens and an iconic bridge. In the following century, George IV oversaw the further embellishment of the park, paving the way for successive royals to further create charming landscapes and flower displays. Today, the Windsor Great Park consists of some 4,800 acres of stunning landscape, and offers an array of activities including horse riding, fishing and tennis courts.
