History:

The Albert Memorial was unveiled in 1872 and is located in Hyde Park in London, England. It was commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her beloved husband Prince Albert. The memorial consists of an ornate Gothic-style canopy supported by columns, which sits atop a plinth. Inside the canopy is a marble bust of Prince Albert, which was sculpted by John Henry Foley. Around the plinth are bronze sculptures representing eight virtues which Albert upheld, as well as four figures which represent the major continents of the world, alongside a variety of literary and cultural figures from the Victorian era. The memorial is also decorated with a number of elaborate reliefs depicting scenes from the Bible and classical mythology. The most famous of these is the winged figure of Piety, which stands at the top of the structure. The Albert Memorial has been a Grade I listed building since 1970 and is one of London’s most visited landmarks. It underwent an extensive renovation and conservation project between 2011 and 2017 during which time the structures were cleaned and conserved, while the sculptures were sent away for specialist restoration.
