History:
The Sharjah Archaeology Museum is one of the oldest museums in the United Arab Emirates. The museum was established in 1972 by the then ruler of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The museum's mission is to preserve, research and promote the archaeology and cultural heritage of the Emirate of Sharjah and the region of the United Arab Emirates. The museum houses a large collection of archaeological artefacts from the region, which date from prehistoric times to modern-day. The artefacts are divided into four sections: Prehistory, Islamic Art & Arabia, Sharjah Museums Development Program, and Modern Archaeology. The museum also has an adjacent temporary exhibition gallery, as well as a library containing books related to archaeology and history. The Sharjah Archaeology Museum has regularly hosted art exhibitions and archaeological lecture series over the years, aiming to increase public knowledge and appreciation of the history of Sharjah and the UAE. The museum was awarded the Council of Arab Tourism (CATO) Award for Best Archaeological Museum in the Arabian Gulf in 2007. In 2006, the museum was recognised by UNESCO's World Heritage organisation for its contributions to the promotion of world archaeological heritage. The museum is located in the old-city district of Sharjah, near the historical Fort of Al Hisn. It is open daily from 8am-8pm, and admission is free.
