It is the first shopping center in the Middle East, located in the historical business district on the north side of Dubai Creek. The mall originally opened in 1995, and at that time was considered the biggest shopping center in the Middle East. The mall underwent major renovations in 1999 and 2005, which included adding a 10-screen multiplex cinema, a 5-star hotel, and an amusement park with rides, pools, and water slides. In addition, numerous restaurants and a nightclub were added. By 2012, the mall had grown significantly. It was one of the most visited shopping centers in the region, as it housed over 400 stores, including high-end brands like Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Armani, and more. It also had five theme courts, including water features, carousels, and more. In 2016, City Centre Deira began the process of expanding the mall, and the lower level was expanded from 350,000 to 420,000 square feet.
