The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial archipelago located in Dubai, UAE. It was created as part of the Emirate’s grand vision for the future of the city. The project was conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, in 2001 and was developed with the aid of Dutch dock-building experts. The Palm is the world’s largest man-made island and even though it is one of the newer developments in the city, it has already become an iconic symbol of Dubai. The construction of the project began in the mid-2000s and was completed in 2007. The Palm features three distinct parts: a mainland which serves as the middle point of the Palm, a 16-kilometer-long crescent which creates the two islands on either side, and the base of the crescent which is made up of 17-kilometer-long sections of land that form an artificial wall. The Palm is a major tourist attraction due to its luxury amenities, including its artificial beaches, its world-class shopping malls, and its large selection of luxury hotels. The world's first underwater luxury hotel, the Palm Atlantis, was also built on the island in 2006. The Palm also includes marine attractions such as its Aquaventure Waterpark and its Dolphin Bay.
