History:
Al Ain Racecourse is one of the oldest horse racing tracks in the Middle East. The racecourse was founded in 1933 by a British Army officer, Captain Gordon Haycock. He had been stationed in the region for two years and, with permission from Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, leased the land from which the racecourse was built. Al Ain Racecourse officially opened with its first racing meeting on December 25, 1933. The inauguration was considered one of the first modern day sporting events in the region. Since then, the racecourse has grown dramatically and now serves as one of the major horse racing venues in the world. The first races held at Al Ain Racecourse were mainly between Arabs. After the second World War, the track began to attract riders from all around the world. Famous jockeys such as Lester Piggott, Willie Carson, Pat Eddery, and Walter Swinburn have ridden at the racecourse. In the early 1990’s, the UAE government began investing significantly in the sport of horse racing and revamped the Al Ain Racecourse. The track was also given a facelift and iconic grandstands were built. In 1998, the first Dhow Racing Festival was held and has since become an annual event at the venue.
