After the United Arab Emirates was formed in 1971, the Al Qasba area was transformed into a destination for leisure and culture. This began in 1985 when the Sharjah government announced its plans for Al Qasba, creating a thought-provoking leisure destination with diverse offerings. The first development in this area was the 'Eye of the Emirates Ferris wheel'. This was built in 2001 and has since become an iconic feature of the area, standing at 130m tall.
