History:

Sir Bani Yas Island is an oasis of education, conservation and leisure located 175 kilometers southwest of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is the largest natural Arabian Gulf island in the UAE, stretching across 860 km². The island was discovered in 1971 when divers exploring the island discovered ancient artefacts, including Roman-style anchors and remains of a trading ship. It was then purchased by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the United Arab Emirates. In 1976, Sheikh Zayed began to convert Sir Bani Yas Island into a nature park with the aim of preserving the island’s exotic flora and fauna, as well as its historical resources. Subsequent conservation effort has earned Sir Bani Yas Island a place on UNESCO’s list of recognised natural heritage sites. Today, Sir Bani Yas Island is home to a wild array of animals, including the Arabian oryx, leopards, gazelles, antelopes and cheetahs, which are cared for in the island’s Arabian Wildlife Park.
