History:
Balkanabat Park (formerly called Nebit Dag Park, or Oil Hill Park) is located in Balkanabat, Turkmenistan, near the Caspian Sea. The park was built in the early 20th century by drilling for oil and gas in the area, leading to the creation of a large artificial mountain out of the excess rocks and soil produced from the drilling. The park was renovated in 1999, and it now covers around 200 acres (80 hectares) divided into four themed sections. One of the sections is themed after the oil and gas drilling that produced the mountain, and includes a drilling rig and a large stone “tree”. There is also a section devoted to local fauna, and a popular children’s section with an interactive fountain. The park is accessible from the center of town, and it is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Over the years, several new attractions have been added to the park, including an observation tower, a cafe, and a variety of sculptures. The park is also the site of several large events, such as the International Summer Music Festival and the Ice Magic Light Show in the winter.
