History:

Esenguly Mosque (Esengüli Khaan Masjidi) is the oldest mosque in the country of Turkmenistan, located in Esenguly Bey, a district just outside of Mary City, located in Mary Province. This mosque was first constructed during the 11th century by Abu-l-Fadl Javanshir, a Seljuk chieftain, who was a follower of the Hanafi School of Islamic law. The mosque was expanded during the reign of Amadil al-Kadi-al-Moveli in the 13th century. During the 15th century, a colonnade was added to the entrance hall, which housed a fountain meant to commemorate the victory of Isfandiyar III over the Ottomans during the same period. The structure suffered damage during a conflict in the early 19th century, when it was used as a fortress, and the damaged areas were later restored by Esenguly Bey himself in the 1820s. The mosque underwent renovations by Russian architects in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, it is renowned for its historical significance, intricate architecture, and as a sacred Islamic site. The Esenguly Mosque now hosts a number of religious activities, including the annual Naumachia celebration, which is a two-day event attended by thousands of people from all over the country. The atmosphere on the day of the Naumachia is one of merriment and festivity, with people offering prayers and dedicating celebratory songs and dances to Allah.
