History:

The Pergamon Acropolis in Izmir is an ancient fortification situated on a natural citadel in the city of Izmir, in the Aegean region of Turkey. It is believed to have been built by the Byzantines during the 4th century A.D., making it one of the oldest and best-preserved fortresses in the country. Pergamon served as the capital of the Hellenistic Kingdom of Pergamon, and later, the Roman Empire as one of its provinces, during the 1st-2nd centuries. It became an important cultural and religious center due to its proximity to the gods of ancient Greece, as well as its popularity with succesful merchants. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 178 CE, but rebuilt shortly afterwards and continued to draw pilgrims from around the Mediterranean.
