The Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei (literally translated to Leipzig Cotton Spinning Mill), commonly referred to as the LBW, is a former cotton spinning mill in the city of Leipzig, Germany. The facility was established in 1845 as part of the cotton industry boom during the first half of the 19th century. Originally a farm property, the LBW was transformed into a steam-powered, modern spinning mill offering employment to around 800 people. During this period, a group of buildings were built to house the factory’s equipment and the workers, which still exist today and make up the LBW’s original configuration. After the end of World War II, the LBW became a state-owned enterprise, and continued to employ hundreds of workers until its closure in 1998. As the years progressed, the LBW underwent several changes, and several of its structures were replaced with new constructions. Nevertheless, the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei still stands as one of the few remaining relics of the industrial revolution in Leipzig. In 2015, the LBW was converted into a cultural center, known simply as “LBW15”, and has since become a popular venue for festivals, concerts, and art exhibitions, as well as housing a variety of cultural and creative start-ups. The new LBW15 also includes a modern biergarten, a café, and a restaurant. It has since become an important hub for creativity in the city of Leipzig.
