History:

is a Hindu temple located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu. Koodal Azhagar temple is situated just opposite to Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. The temple is believed to have been built by King Kulasekara Pandyan and is more than 1500 years old. The temple has an imposing Rajagopuram, a 109ft high entrance tower with nine tiers. Inside the temple, the main deity is Lord Vishnu in the form of Alagar, as enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum. The temple has a temple tank, known as the Manimaalai theertham. Other deities of the temple are Vinayagar, Suchindram Vinayagar, Boodhanaar, Naagar, Mahaalatchmei, Ezhavaalar, Soundaryalakshmi, Kulasekara Pandyan and Udayavar. Worship Method:

Koodal Azhagar Temple of Madurai in Tamil Nadu follows the traditional rituals of the ancient Tamil gods. During the worship of the temple, the devotees chant many hymns and mantras related to Lord Shiva. The procedure starts in the morning with abisheka (bathing) of Lord Shiva (Kudal Azhagar) by pouring Ganga water, milk, honey, and other items. This abisheka is considered very sacred as it has the power to purify one of all their sins. After the abisheka, the devotees offer offerings of fruits, flowers, camphor, incense, and Darbha grass to the lord. They also pray to him for their individual needs, and for the good of humanity. After the pooja (worship), the devotees then part take in the Arathi (fire oblation) ceremony and offer lamps filled with ghee to the lord in order to get his blessings. This ceremony is followed by the practice of Aarti (circumambulation) of the Lord around the temple.
