Worship Method:

The Mahamaham Temple is one of the most revered temples in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. Worship here is done according to various Shaiva Agamas. The devotees of Mahamaham Temple visit the temple to offer prayers and offerings to Lord Shiva. They perform Abhishekam (ritual bath) for Lord Shiva with special Panchamirtha water that is prepared with Milk, Honey, Ghee, Curd and Sugar. They then offer Ghee Lamp to the Lord and perform Aarati (waving of fire in circular direction). Afterwards, they sing devotional songs and offer flowers to Lord Shiva. After the worship, aasirvadam (blessing) is given to the devotees. The temple also conducts the grand mahamaham festival, which is celebrated in the Tamil month of Masi every year. During this festival, lakhs of devotees from all over India travel to Kumbakonam to attend the festival. A grand procession of Lord Shiva is conducted and a large Panchamiralam theertham is prepared in the temple tank and offered to the Lord.
