The initial building on the site of the present-day Sion Cathedral, was built in the 3rd century A.D. following the conversion of the Valais to Christianity. It was a small Romanesque structure, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 11th century and then rebuilt. The structure was built in the Gothic style and it was completed in 1290. The cathedral underwent several renovations and restorations over the centuries, the most visible of which took place at the end of the 18th century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Switzerland.
