History:

It is assumed that the Cathedral of Saint Ursus was originally built as a small Romanesque church in the 11th century. The crypt was consecrated during the rule of Count Albert I of Heristal. The chancel and later the transept were subsequently added during the reign of Count Arnold of Ostrevent. The cathedral was completed in 1201, when Bishop Henry of Basel had the west front finished. The original style of the church was Romanesque, though modifications have been made through the centuries since then. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Switzerland.

Many sources have mistakenly referred to this building as St. Ulsern's Cathedral, as the name was commonly mistranscribed from Latin. Despite being called a cathedral it still remains a collegiate church. In 1877 a fire destroyed much of the interior and led to various restorations, which are still ongoing. These have served to preserve some of the stunning medieval artwork. The exterior was largely unharmed by the fire and still contains much of its original 11th century Romanesque architecture.
