History:
National Aquarium Denmark, Den Blå Planet, is a public aquarium located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was opened in 2013 and is the largest aquarium in Northern Europe. Prior to the current facility, there had been a smaller aquarium in Copenhagen, known as the Dyrehavsakvariet, located in Frederiksberg Gardens, which opened in 1933. It was closed in 2012 and demolished in preparation for the new aquarium. The National Aquarium Denmark was built as part of the redevelopment of Copenhagen Harbor and was designed by 3XN Architects. Construction of the aquarium began in 2009 and the aquarium was opened to the public in March 2013. It houses over 18,000 animals, including otters, seals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. The aquarium features exhibits, educational programs, and special events highlighting the world’s aquatic biodiversity. The aquarium is also home to two permanent exhibitions: “Journey to the Blue Planet”, which tells the story of how life in the ocean is connected to people and the environment, and “Fascination of the Sea”, an interactive exhibit allowing visitors to experience the ocean and explore its many wonders.
