Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, Denmark, is a magnificent Renaissance palace built between 1574 and 1620 for Christian IV of Denmark. The castle was originally a royal residence, but today it serves primarily as a museum housing an extensive collection of portraits and furniture from the Danish Golden Age. The castle was originally the home of Frederick II of Denmark, but that was destroyed by fire in 1629. King Christian IV wanted to build a palace that was grand and luxurious enough to rival Versailles, and so began the construction of Frederiksborg Castle. After the fire in 1629, the ruins of the original castle were cleared away and replaced by a much grander palace. The new castle was designed with a symmetrical Dutch Renaissance facade and included a grand formal garden complete with lush gardens, ponds, and fountains. The construction of the castle was overseen by Kriegel, who controlled a workforce of over 5,000 workers. The ornate main hall of the castle was finished in 1606 and the surrounding courtyards and gardens were completed by 1620. The considerable expense of constructing the castle, however, nearly bankrupted the Danish Crown. Frederiksborg Castle has withstood numerous wars, invasions, and fires over the years. In 1859, a disastrous fire destroyed nearly all of the interior of the castle. The rebuilding of the castle began immediately and, by 1882, the interior had been fully restored.
