The Aarhus Cathedral has a long and exciting history. The church was first built in the year 1060 as a Romanesque cathedral. In the mid-13th century, it was completely destroyed by fire along with most of the city and had to be entirely rebuilt. After its reconstruction, the cathedral was enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries, forming the church that we know today. The cathedral has a total length of 98.5 meters (324 feet), making it the longest church in Denmark. The west towers are 83.8 meters (275 feet) tall and the tallest spire stands at 88.7 meters (291 feet) tall. In the four corners of the choir there are statues of King David and three of the four evangelists. The cathedral has a crypt containing a reliquary with a piece of the True Cross and other relics.
