Parish of Abernethy In Scotland: History,Facts, & Services

The Parish of Abernethy is located in the Scottish Highlands, just east of the Cairngorms National Park. It is one of seven civil parishes located in the area. Historical records indicate that parts of Abernethy may have been settled as far back as the Iron Age, while the earliest written reference to Abernethy appears in the 12th century. The parish's economy was traditionally based upon arable and dairy farming, but more recently has diversified with the growth of tourism in the area. The nearest large town is Aviemore, which is located to the south of the parish. In terms of services, the parish is served by the Abernethy and Kincardine Parish Church, a community shop and post office, a school, and a small community hall. The village hall in Boat of Garten also serves the parish. The village of Abernethy also boasts a family-run inn which is popular with locals and visitors alike. As well as being a beautiful place to live and visit, the parish of Abernethy has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Many area landmarks, including the Covenanter's Stone and the White Cow of Abernethy, have survived from the pre-Reformation era. The Abernethy Round Tower, which was erected during the 11th century and is now a Scheduled Monument, is another popular landmark. The area is also home to a preserved Highland wildlife park, as well as a medieval graveyard and the remains of a 12th-century chapel.
