Dawyck Chapel is a chapel of ease in the Scottish borders. It was built around 1690 for the landed gentry of Stobo, a nearby estate. The chapel was used for occasional services by the nearby Stobo Kirk, and remains an important part of the local community today. Dawyck Chapel is a small but beautiful building, constructed of red sandstone and featuring prominent cupolas. Inside, the chapel features a barrel-vaulted ceiling, stone floor tiles, memorial tablets and panelling. It is one of the best churches in Scotland which you must visit.

History:

The lands of Dawyck were owned by the Urie family from the late 15th century. Before the introduction of the Chapel, parishioners from the Stobo Kirk parish would walk more than a mile to attend services. The members of the Urie family had clearly grown weary of this and in 1690 decided to build a dedicated chapel. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.

Dawyck Chapel is classified as a category A-listed building by Historic Scotland. The interior of the chapel retains many original features, such as its double spiral stairs, round-headed windows, barrel-vaulted ceiling and elm-wood carving. Despite surviving a fire in 1965, the chapel is generally considered to be in excellent condition.
Services:

The chapel holds regular services throughout the year, including a traditional Communion service in the Scottish episcopalian tradition. It is also available for hire on a limited basis, currently accommodating up to 30 people.
