Black Mount Parish Church In Scotland: History,Facts, & Services

Black Mount Parish Church is an historic Presbyterian Church of Scotland situated near the village of Glencoe in the Lochaber region of the Scottish Highlands. The Parish dates to 1625 when it was established by the Church of Scotland. Black Mount Parish Church is a category B listed building and is still used today for regular services on Sundays and weekdays. It is the home of the grave of Macintosh of Glencoe. History In 1625, the Church of Scotland established the parish of Black Mount. The original parish included a cluster of mountain farms which stretched up and around the Black Mount, north to the Aonaraidh valley and south towards Glencoe. The first church building was constructed in 1633 and the minister, Robert Rankyne, was installed in 1645. In the mid-18th century, the congregation had grown significantly, and a decision was made to rebuild the church. The new building was finished in 1761 and still stands today. Facts * The parish church, built in 1761, is still used for regular services. * The church is a category B listed building. * The graveyard is the final resting place of the clansmen of the MacDonalds of Glencoe, including the last Chief of the Glencoe MacDonalds, Ranald MacDonald. * In 1945, the church was extended and a bell tower was added. Services The parish of Black Mount has regular Church of Scotland services, including a 10.30am Sunday service. During the week there is also a Tuesday afternoon afternoon service at 2pm, and a Wednesday morning prayer meeting at 11am.
