Balquhidder Parish Church In Scotland: History,Facts, & Services
History:
Balquhidder Parish Church is the oldest surviving congregation in Perthshire, founded in 1446. According to local tradition it was founded by the legendary Rob Roy MacGregor of Balquhidder who is buried in the kirkyard. The church received its first written charter from the Gordon's of Aberuchill Castle in 1511. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.

• The church is a category A listed building. • The church building has been renovated and refurbished in 1803, 1868 and 1896. • It houses a collection of 18th and 19th Century memorials and contains a stained glass window depictingthe Crucifixion of Christ. • The church also contains an 11th Century gravestone, known as the 'MacLaren Stone', and is said to represent Kenneth MacLaren of Balquhidder, who died at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
