The original name of the church was Forresterhill Congregational Church, after the district of Edinburgh in which it was situated. When first established in 1928, services were held in a former suffragette hall until the main auditorium was opened in 1935. During World War II, the church acted as a focal point of local aid and support. It renamed itself Hope Church in 1958 after the death of its minister, Rev. James Hope, who died after a long association with the church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.
