As the oldest church in Aberdeenshire, it has stood for over 900 years, as a place of worship dedicated to St. Olaf, the patron saint of Norway. Monymusk Parish Church is steeped in history, with archeological evidence of a monastic site having been here as far back as the 6th century. It became the Culdee (or solitary) Monastery of the Celtic Church, led by Saint Moluag, which flourished here until 1210. It is one of the best churches in Scotland which you must visit.

History:

Monymusk Parish Church is thought to have been built by Saint Moluag c. 575-599 and dedicated to St. Olaf. The original building was destroyed by the Vikings in the early 11th Century, but a small stone church remained and was consecrated by Bishop Turgot in the presence of King David I in 1150. Further restoration took place in the 15th century, when the north aisle and belfry were added, and the church was extensively renovated and redecorated in the late 19th century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.

Monymusk Parish Church is a Grade A listed building and is a popular tourist attraction for those interested in history. It is believed to have been visited by Robert the Bruce in 1320, and the famous Monymusk Reliquary (an ornamental casket made of copper and silver alloy) is still preserved in the church.
