This mosque dates back to 740 and was named for the founder, Sulaiman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Zahir, who was the fourth ruler of the Zahirid kingdom. In 863, Al-Zahir was expanded by Ibn Tahir and some of its features were altered in 1147 CE. It was used for regular prayer and Noble Quranic recitation until the beginning of the 1200's. A new building was constructed in 1570 and went through a major renovation in the 1700's, although it still retains some of its original features. In the late 19th century, Masjid Al-Zahir was the site of many religious events, including lectures and hadiths by Ibn Achour and Al-Sadiq.
