The original architecture of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi al-Kabir in Saudi Arabia dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad's rule. Its layout has been modified over time to adjust to the rising number of worshippers and the characteristics of the new Islamic architecture. The current layout consists of nine courtyards that surround the main prayer hall, which is located in the centre. The courtyards are surrounded by minarets and walls, which form the physical barrier of the mosque.
