Brief History:
Masjid al-Farouq, or the Farooq Mosque, located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the second-holiest site in Islam after the Sacred Mosque. Built in the 1930s, the mosque was completed in 1950 and is thus relatively modern. The Farooq Mosque is situated close to the Maqam Ibrahim and the Jamaraat Bridge, and to the Kaaba. It is a well-known site for all Muslim visitors to Mecca due to its importance and proximity to the Hajj sites and the key sites for other Muslim rituals within the vicinity of the Sacred Mosque. Masjid al-Farouq (Mecca) is located in the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is one of the largest mosques in the world with an area of 356,800 square meters (88.2 acres). It is also the holiest mosque in Islam as it is the site of the Kaaba, the holiest site in the religion. The mosque was constructed in the late 1970s, and has a capacity of approximately 800,000 worshipers. The building is surrounded by marble columns and arches, and is illuminated by nine massive marble-clad lampstands. The inner courtyards of the mosque are adorned with carpets, and the walls are adorned with verses from the Quran in Arabic calligraphy. The al-Farouq mosque also houses the famous Kaaba, a cube-shaped structure built by Ibrahim and Ishmael and visited by millions of Muslims every year. At the center of the mosque, there are seven minarets, each with a height of 54 meters. The main prayer hall contains 52 marble columns and two pulpits for the imams. The walls and columns of the prayer halls are adorned with luxurious green, white and yellow marble. The mosque compound also contains a library, a Quranic school, a health center, an administrative building, and a commercial center. The mosque is also equipped with an air-conditioning system to maintain ideal climate conditions for worshipers. Additionally, the exterior of the mosque is routinely illuminated with a 3-D light show which includes special patterns and shapes that display the grandeur of Masjid Al-Farouq.
