It is one of the three most significant mosques in the city, along with Masjid al-Nabawi and Quba Mosque. Historically, it was the first mosque to open its doors to the public after the Islamic prophet Muhammad's death and the take over of Medina by the first caliph, Abu Bakr. The mosque was also the center of religious learning and teaching during the time of Umar, and is mentioned in many of his sermons. It is believed to have been the first mosque to have the Darud (Salawat) prayer, a prayer said for the blessings of Prophet Muhammad, recited on a daily basis.
