The original building was constructed during the first Islamic century of the Prophet Muhammad’s era (570–632 AD) by two brothers: Mujahid ibn Ubayd Allah and his brother ‘Adb Allah. The most notable structural features of the mosque are the two high, round walls that served as a defensive measure against any potential threat from invaders. This is a unique feature found only in Masjid al-Makhya. The mosque has two minarets, four domes and an open-air plaza in front of the mosque. The four domes are constructed using intricately patterned wooden beams and decorative tiles. Within the mosque are four large and beautiful courtyards, where the mosque’s internal walls are made of marble. In the center of the courtyard stands the Maqam Al-Rahman, or the Chair of Mercy, where Mujahid and ‘Adb Allah spent their last nights together in prayer. The walls of Masjid al-Makhya are made of large stone slabs, and the vast entryway is framed with stone pillars. Inside the mosque, the main effect is one of gentle grandeur, with ample space and light pouring into the magnificent interior. The effect is further enhanced by rich hues of the wall tiles and intricate patterns on the domes. Today, the mosque serves as a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists alike, as it houses historical artifacts from the era of Prophet Muhammad and showcases Islamic art and architecture.
